Brentin Ungar

Brentin Ungar is going into his final year of University for his International Relations Master’s program at Pázmány Péter Catholic University. Brentin was one of the few hundred people selected to take part in the Hungarian Diaspora scholarship due to his academic performance. Brentin has previously worked as a Legislative Aide at the Ohio Statehouse before continuing his education giving him a strong grounding in legislative and policy work.

Brentin had a strong passion for Hungarian culture and an interest in its political history since he was a child, where he grew up hearing stories from his grandfather, father, aunts, and uncles about their lives growing up in the Hungarian neighbourhoods of Detroit back in its heyday. This experience inspired Brentin to write his upcoming Master thesis about the political influence of Diaspora politics in the United States.

“Diaspora communities are a key pillar of identity and a unifying aspect for their members giving them a shared set of values and community goals. Which always fascinated me. My goal for my thesis is to explore how these communities, including the Hungarian Diaspora that my family is a part of, influences how the United States conducts itself internationally. As that cultural influence is a part of my heritage and family even though we were born in the United States.” – Brentin Ungar

In his spare time, Brentin enjoys visiting museums, going and long hikes at national parks, and traveling to new places. Brentin’s goals for the future are to pursue a career in the foreign service to work at US embassies overseas, and to work at a think tank that focuses on US-Central European relations.
