Across the street from the new World War I Memorial on Pennsylvania Avenue, on December 3, 2024 the Hungary Foundation together with the Doughboy Foundation proudly hosted a full-house event to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the 1914 Christmas Truce and celebrate the launch of the second volume of In the Centennial Footsteps of the Great War by Attila Szalay-Berzeviczy. This monumental two-volume work serves as a breathtaking visual and historical chronicle of World War I, crafted by an accomplished economist, world traveler, and gifted storyteller.
The program included remarks by Denise VanBuren, Co-Chair of the Doughboy Foundation, and a moderated conversation with the author, led by Jari Villanueva, President of the Doughboy Foundation.
The evening highlighted the profound impact of World War I, particularly on Hungary, where the war’s aftermath reshaped the nation and its identity. The event also reflected on the enduring legacy of the Christmas Truce of 1914—a poignant reminder of shared humanity amidst conflict—and its timeless message of peace and goodwill.
At the conclusion of the event, Justin Shubow, President of the National Civic Art Society gave a tour of the new World War One Monument right across the street from the event’s venue.
We extend our gratitude to our partners—the Pritzker Military Library and Museum, the World War One Museum, the American Battle Monuments Foundation, the National Civic Art Society, MCC and the Doughboy Foundation—for their commitment to preserving history and promoting civic education.
