Quinnipiac University’s Central European Institute, in collaboration with the Hungary Foundation, hosted their joint alumni gathering on September 8th, 2024 at the Buda Castle.
This annual event serves as a networking opportunity for those eager to contribute to a brighter future for Hungary and the region by providing educational and business opportunities for younger generations in both the US and Hungary.
The uplifting occasion brought together alumni of the Quinnipiac HABL program, Hungary Foundation’s graduate scholarship alumni, as well as HF’s fellowship and internship alumni to connect with HF’s board members, Hungarian policymakers, and other guests for their further professional and personal advancement.
At the beginning of the event, Christopher Ball, the Széchenyi Chair in Economics and Director of Quinnipiac University’s Central European Institute (CEI), extended a warm welcome to all the guests. He discussed the commencement of the journey for the recent Hungarian American Business Leaders scholars this year, provided an update on the progress of the current scholars at the midway point of their studies, and shed light on QU’s Art as Ambassador umbrella program, as well as Quinnipiac’s partnership with HF and MCC.
HF’s Executive Director Anna Smith Lacey reflected on the historical roots of the strong connections between Hungary and the United States. These connections not only facilitate cultural exchange and economic opportunities but also pave the way for impactful partnerships in various fields such as education, business, technology, and innovation.
She also expressed gratitude towards the dedicated and proactive HF Alumni Board for their incredible work in steering this year’s alumni activities. She then introduced the new Hungarian and American fellows supported by the foundation in 2024, emphasizing the impact of their work.
Tamás Fellegi‘s heartfelt reflection on the founding era of the organization reminded us of the vital mission of HF to foster people-to-people connections between Hungary and the United States. His words truly encapsulated the essence of HF’s vision and the powerful impact it has had over the years.
One of the most moving moments was when the HF Alumni Award was presented to BFP alumnus Stephen Sholl. Stephen’s dedication and drive during the challenging times of the pandemic exemplified the spirit of perseverance and commitment. His outstanding work as a writer and his immersion in Hungarian history and culture showcased the transformative power of the fellowship program.
Stephen’s continued contributions in Hungary exemplify the lasting impact of the HF fellowship, as he not only excelled in his personal growth but also extended a helping hand to others. His journey is a testament to the incredible opportunities and growth that HF provides, and it serves as an inspiration to all those who strive to make a meaningful difference.
