The Hungary Foundation, Executive Director Job Description & Job Qualifications:
The Executive Director is hired by the Board of Trustees and reports to the Board. The job is a part-time position.
The Executive Director is responsible for:
- Managing the daily operations of the office;
- Directing all personnel working for HIF, including contracted or employed or intern;
- Maintaining contact with outside service providers, including the financial assistant, auditor, and legal counsel;
- Executing the Board’s investment policy and decisions;
- Maintaining contact with the Government of Hungary in relevant matters;
- Preparing management reports, proposals for the Board;
- Preparing grant request summaries and recommendations for the board;
- Designing programs, preparing program descriptions, and Requests for proposals;
- Designing and executing approved communication policies and actions, e.g., the website, Facebook and Twitter accounts;
- Representing HIF with the Hungarian American community and maintaining productive working relationships with its representatives, as well as with applicants for solicited or unsolicited projects;
- Supporting the board and attending board meetings in a non-voting capacity.
As an indication, the selected part-time person would be compensated with a salary between $40,000 and 60,000 per year, depending on the individual’s qualifications and employment history.

Qualifications for HIF Executive Director
HIF needs an executive director who:
- speaks both English and Hungarian
- has a basic understanding of corporate governance
- has an understanding of basic legal matters, including FARA compliance issues, conflict of interest issues, requirements of 501.c.3 status
- has the necessary posture and communication skills to be accepted by the Hungarian American community
- has a positive working relationship with the GoH.
To translate these generalities into specifics, HIF wants an executive director with the following necessary qualifications:
- Excellent communication skills in both Hungarian and English
- Lived both in the US and Hungary for at least 6 months
- If native Hungarian, some form of US educational background or high qualification training (preferably Ph.D., M.A, or bar exam)
- Minimum of 5 years work experience
- Minimum of 1-year leadership or management experience
Qualifications good or an extra to have:
- Work experience both in the public and the private sector in any of the two countries
- Experience in legal compliance, overseeing fiscal activities including budgeting and
- Experience in developing and implementing procedures and regulations
- Understanding both the Hungarian and the American political and governmental structures, legal environments pertaining to HIF’s operations and activities
- Familiarity with the Hungarian American community
