This fall the Graduate Scholarship program of HIF is supporting Janka Deli, a fellow at Stanford Law School, to pursue her master’s degree in law by participating in the one-year long ‘Stanford Program in International Legal Studies’ focusing on empirical legal research.

At Stanford, Janka is analyzing the relations between foreign direct investment and the rule of law. With her case study Janka strives to contribute to the existing research materials and literature on international investment and development studies and aims to help better understand the interaction between economic and political changes in contemporary Hungary. The program will qualify Janka to pursue a doctoral degree in law and to write a doctoral dissertation applying empirical legal research methods.

Prior to Stanford Law School, Janka obtained her J.D. degree at Pázmány Péter Catholic University and at the same time did extracurricular studies at Mathias Corvinus Collegium in Budapest. Throughout her education she also completed economic courses and training to gain a deeper understanding of the economic mindset. She was granted an exchange scholarship to Saint Louis University for the fall semester of 2015, where she furthered her studies in the economic analysis of law. Following graduation, she worked in the private sector for one year in the field of financial regulation and enrolled in the PhD program of Pázmány Péter Catholic University.
Developing Hungarian legal education
Upon the completion of the program, Janka aims to contribute to the reform of the legal education in Hungary by channeling in the new ideas of world-leading intellectuals as a practicing scholar teaching ‘law & economics’ and wishes to support change in Hungarian legal culture as a policy making adviser.
“In the future, equipped with the ability to conduct empirical legal research, I would like to participate in the dialogue between legal scholars and policy making to reach better solutions through efficient and just laws.”
Janka is also committed to giving back to her communities. As her special project, she would like to promote and support applications of Hungarian law students to US master’s programs in law by holding workshops on the application process and sharing her experience and knowledge with current Hungarian law students at Mathias Corvinus Collegium and her alma mater.
