Csaba Horvath spent his Andrássy National Security Fellowship at the Institute of World Politics (IWP) in Washington, D.C., where he focused on strengthening his understanding of contemporary geopolitical dynamics and translating those insights into research relevant to Hungary’s strategic outlook. During the Fall 2025 fellowship period (September–December 2025), Csaba structured his work around three priorities: sustained research and writing, direct exposure to policy debates within the U.S. foreign policy community, and building professional relationships that can support future collaboration.

A central outcome of his fellowship is a recorded IWP virtual talk prepared as a “K-Chair Symposium Lecture,” which distills one strand of his research into a clear, public-facing presentation and is scheduled for publication on IWP’s online platforms in early 2026. Alongside this lecture, Csaba conducted ongoing research and drafting on the strategic position of Central and Eastern Europe, developing materials that will continue to inform his work beyond the fellowship period.

To connect academic research with real-world policy practice, Csaba actively participated in public events across the broader policy ecosystem. A key highlight was his attendance at ACI’s New York Forum on Economic Sanctions (December 3–4, 2025), which provided a focused look at how sanctions, export controls, and anti–money laundering compliance are evolving amid heightened geopolitical risk.

“All these experiences helped me refine his analytical framework, test assumptions against professional practice, and better understand the institutional and legal constraints that shape policy decisions”. – Csaba Horvath

Overall, the fellowship was an important step in Csaba’s longer-term commitment to security-focused research and practical policy engagement. He values opportunities that bring together scholars and practitioners, and he aims to continue building on the insights and connections formed during the program to support thoughtful, informed discussion of Hungary’s strategic challenges and options in a rapidly changing international environment.
